This section is dedicated to my grandfather, Staff Sergeant Robert "Bob" Duvall. Staff Sergeant Duvall served with the 1st Infantry Division during the war, serving for over twenty years as a small arms repairer and military policeman.
Welcome home, troopers.
1965 - 1972
Harkening back to the days of spurs and saddle, the 1st Cavalry Division once again took to mounts to face their enemy.
During the early 1960s, the division changed rapidly. Stallions became helicopters and six-shooters morphed into M-16s. Reflagged as the 1st Cavalry Division (Air Mobile), the 'Air Cavalry' arrived in Vietnam in 1965, relieving the Siege of Plei Mi before engaging the North Vietnamese in the Ia Drang Valley and the Tet Offensive. The bulk of the division departed Vietnam in 1972, ending their time in Vietnam as the most famous unit in the war and with 30 Medal of Honor recipients amongst their ranks.
